6 things about Seek by iNaturalist

1. Seek was made by the iNaturalist team with support from the California Academy of Sciences, the National Geographic Society, Our Planet on Netflix, WWF, HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, and Visipedia.
2. Drawing from millions of wildlife observations on iNaturalist, Seek shows you lists of commonly recorded insects, birds, plants, amphibians, and more in your area.
3. Our image recognition technology is based on observations submitted to iNaturalist.org and partner sites, and identified by the iNaturalist community.
4. Some user data will be collected if you choose to sign in with an iNaturalist account, but you must be over 13 or have your parents permission to do so.
5. Seek will ask permission to turn on location services, but your location is obscured to respect your privacy while still allowing species suggestions from your general area.
6. Your precise location is never stored in the app or sent to iNaturalist unless you sign in to your iNaturalist account and submit your observations.

  • Frustrating

Seek fails to identify fully 80% or more of plants and insects I ask it to ID. Or it gives me a general species and suggests a clearer photo or that I zoom in, even though the photo could hardly be more clear. This is annoying and frustrating. Often I’m trying to determine if an organism is harmful or beneficial in my garden, so Seek isn’t helpful in that regard at all. Also, there should be an option for a user to provide an ID for species they already know the ID of in those instances where Seek comes up with no/limited information. This would help grow the database of known species.

  • It’s good but…

Sometimes this app identifies the plant as the wrong name. Also, I tried to identify a bee and if kept looking at the plant instead of the bug even when I zoomed in really far to see the bug. It also will randomly freeze so that the screen becomes really shaded and I can’t click anything. However, I LOVE going up to every plant in sight and “observing” it. This app is pretty good.

  • Enhancing my knowledge

This app is so useful on walks, kayaking and hiking. I have expanded my knowledge and amused my family with this wonderful app. Top notch!

  • Great app

I love this app growing up I was some what of a naturalist caching bugs, snakes, lizards and so on and had stacks of Audubon field guides, and this is one of the best tools for identifying every aspect of nature. I do a lot of backpacking and this is great for logging your finds. I would definitely suggest this for others.

  • Misidentifications

When I first began using Seek it seemed to be very accurate but in the last few months it has become ridiculously wrong especially with animals. It has identified my Lab as a Tapir, Bat, and various other mammals even though 2 years ago correctly identified her as a Chocolate Lab. The app has permission to use my location but identifies a common local snake as an exotic python from Australia and several other obvious misidentifications. It seems to be a bit more accurate with plants.
