Along with paid tutoring and free online resources I am using Anki to help learn Chinese. I have been using the desktop application since I started; about 9 months now. I have resisted purchasing the app for the longest time now due to the daunting price tag. However, lately I find myself more mobile with less time to sit down and dedicate a solid chunk of time to studying. So I finally took the plunge and made the purchase. I have only been using it for a few days so far but already I think it was a good purchase. First of all, I have relied heavily on the desktop application for a long time now and I don’t mind supporting the developers. Beyond that though, I think it is actually a good app. I have had no issues with synchronization, which is important to me because I still create cards on my computer. And syncing study progress from the phone to the computer has been fine as well. It ported my css layout and audio media files as well which was important. I haven’t experimented with all of the features yet but I saw they built in a scratchpad feature to let you practice your writing. I think that will be useful when I want to practice my writing (I need to get a stylus first). Overall I am satisfied with the app. Again, I do think the price seems a bit high, but it depends what you’re using this for whether the price justifies it. To me, I think this app has and will continue to speed up and strengthen my language learning and that makes it worth it.
Maybe there’s something I need to fix, but now all my decks are gone both here and on Ankiweb? Or maybe my account was deactivated for inactivity? I think I have an old backup & my goal was to start fresh but… this is not ok. “Full sync” one-way only with no indication before pressing that button is really bad design.
I love the anki ecosystem. For school this is a must if you have an Android or Mobile, along with a laptop to use the actual app. If you consistently use anki, get the app. I do wish however the scratchpad for when using an Mobile could be snapped to the left or right of the screen, instead of only the bottom. It would eliminate the need for using another app to draw while you study. Also some different colors would be cool but I can’t ask for too much. Although it is slower than drawing directly in the app. I think even implementing excali draw would be cool. Also since this app is so expensive, I feel like a dedicated suggestion setting somewhere in the menu would be cool so I don’t have to write a review to make a suggestion.
Ever since the new update for the app I have not been able to sync from my phone. It doesn’t let me download from my computer and the only option is to do a full sync to upload what’s on my phone and lose whatever I did on my computer. I did that once to se if it would fix the problem and it didn’t and is still wanting me to full sync every time. I tried redownloading the app and that didn’t work either.
Used over the years for so many languages. Well worth the $25 to support Anki The desktop app and web version are free so personally I bought the app after a few years having used it for free
