I have long feared that one day, the “vault" password management syncing service I have used for years (which shall remain nameless) will get hacked, ruining my life and my business. In cybersecurity, you can never be too paranoid. This concern ultimately led me to discover the genius of Master Password, which I now use only for my most sensitive passwords that must remain offline (not backed up anywhere). This app is the most unique concept for secure password creation and management that I have ever seen. Using an algorithm that generates passwords based on the variables of: (1) your first and last names, (2) the domain name for which you want to generate a password, and (3) your master password (your password to unlock the app), Master Password generates consistent, secure and easily replicable passwords for you. No syncing of your passwords is ever done between your Android and Android, for example, because the passwords generated are consistent based on those 3 variables. Finally, this app gives you an additional level of security in the event of a complete disaster (100% data loss), because you can still recover all of your lost passwords, even though they are not physically stored anywhere, by supplying the 3 variables listed above. If you want completely unique passwords that are not backed up on a remote server somewhere, leaving you vulnerable to an eventual hack, Master Password is a superb solution.
The UI is awful. It has a full-screen interface with your password printed out in giant letters. A neat, clean window would be much better.
I have been using this for 6 months and absolutly love it. so well convieved and executed. thank you so much for developing this simple and powerful password manager, and it is free and open source. thank you.
This is highly recommended to everyone who wants a password manager that even create strong passwords for you. i did not like the way it works. It kinda comes on top of everything and blurs everything. It could have used a window GUI and been more user friendly.
fantastic concept and loads of information on the website about how it works. the 4 stars is only because the app froze on me and then I had to restart the computer to reset it (it doesn’t appear in the ‘force quite applications’ dialog’). there is also a web interface in beta which facilitates getting a site password on a device that isn’t yours and doesn’t have the app on it. re: syncing, @Saintbravo, you simply need to setup up the same user name and master password on each device. You can then export your sites from a device and import them on the new device (or you can enter the site names manually on the new device). the app will calculate the same site specific password if you are using the same user name, site name and master password.
