Learned about the app from a mention by the host of “Abroad in Japan,” Chris. He made the point that Duolingo is good for vocabulary and practice but is lacking in areas that “Human Japanese” is very good in. As a user of Duolingo, that critique of it matched my experience. I really like it, use it daily but feel my grammar is not progressing. HJ has lived up to the description. I am half way through the first app using it as a review. The lessons are clear, engaging, with a bit of challenge so you feel you progressing. I see there is an intermediate HJ and the same group produces Satori Reader (wish that was less expensive).
This is the best language learning app I’ve ever encountered! It has an excellent audio section, great reviews, easy to maneuver chapters, and assuredly more (so don’t worry)! The audio buttons make it great for correcting my tone, or pronunciation. I also find it helpful for trying to discern what is being said, seeing as my eyes aren’t the most detail-oriented. The review section, at the end of every chapter, does help with allowing the lesson sink in. Although, I do find that it can get repetitive with the questions. It’s nice that we get graded when we finish the assessment, and it uses a five-star system. I find that chapters in this app are easy to look back on, seeing as there aren’t a redundant amount of tabs and buttons. Though, I do occasionally have to flip through a multitude of chapters until I can find the one I’m searching for. The author’s tone in this app is very friendly, unlike textbooks; which DO guide you through learning a language, but not as efficiently as this does. The author makes relatively hilarious comments, and that makes it easier to focus and understand the topic. This is just me, but my vocabulary isn’t the strongest, and I do have to look up English words in the dictionary sometimes. While it’s wonderful, I believe the app can improve on the repeated test questions, and possibly add a summary of the chapter underneath the title. It’s not necessary, but it would make it a bit easier. Maybe even the horizontal-only display, if you’re feeling up to it! To summarize, I this is the best language-learning app I’ve encountered so far, and it’s most definitely worth the money. It makes it easy to study Japanese, instead of having to flip through phrase books and websites about a certain topic. Try out the Lite version of the app first, and if you enjoy it, I strongly believe Human Japanese is worth the money. ありがとうございます! o(`ω´ )o P.S. thank you for reading this long review, I hope the paragraphs make it easier to discern! Sincerely, A thankful twelve-year old
Have to force quit app all the time because it opens to a blank screen.
Grammar explanations are what makes this app shine. It's better than most books out there even if at times verbose. Severely lacking in terms of practice and retention, so it's mostly good as a reference. The worst part is that the Mobile version is an entirely separate paid app. The fact it's the exact same UI on Android and Mobile makes it even more irritating. It's a tacky business model. I wouldn't have bought the app had I noticed.
This is definitely the best Japanese language app I have used so far. I took 1 year of Japanese in college have tried multiple apps and books to continue learning but have struggled to find much use out of any of them. I found this app extremely informative and filling in a lot of the gaps in my understanding. It is very detailed in it’s breakdown of the Japanese language, which really helps to adjust your thinking when trying to form and understand Japanese.
