  • Skin-deep Broken Sword, without the charm

"Broken Sword: Director's Cut" is the entire BS game (as far as I can tell; I'm still only in Ireland) with the addition on Nico's side of the story. It also includes the odd little extra scene, like an actual close-up of the newspaper George picks up in the beginning. Voice-over has been retained from the original game in most scenes, except for Nico, who had to be entirely re-recorded, adn except for the odd character. George has many new lines. Overall, BS:DC brings the original BS game closer to what the BS series would shortly become; the focus on the adventure, on the conspiracies, the more modern approach closer to what we see on today television. But here's the thing: it's lost a lot of the charm of the original, where it wasn't about the TV action and bugged apartments but about the secret of a medieval manuscript. First off, I have to talk about Nico's personality. It's jarring, badly so. There are two Nicos in this game; the DC one, which you play in Nico's scenes, and the original one, mostly sitting at her apartment and going over the mystery with George. They are two different personalities, which is easily explained if you consider that in BS1 she was merely a sidekick intended, ultimately, for the PC to "get the girl" and in BS2 she became a PC herself, needing a personality infusion. Unfortunately, her pseudo-vibrant personality (this Nico does impressions at parties that the gay people love, and is always thinking about past boyfriend and relationships, apparently - certainly, interacting with various objects seems to ellicit more sarcasm than seems healthy) only jars with the far more interesting, more in-drawn, more play-it-close-to-the-chest investigative journalist of BS1. As regards the charm and the flavour of BS1, suffice it to say that BS:DC sacrifices the original game's intro. Instead of a game starting after a bomb blast, where a dazed American tourist picks himself up and, out of a vague sense that he owed it to the old man to find his killer... instead of that, the intro dumps you straight into a murder scene in Nico's shoes, after a very trite beginning with lines about "her beloved Paris" that sound like daytime TV at its corniest. Then when you get to George's scene, outisde the cafè, he's spouting some nonsense about the clown ruining his vacation, and vowing to find it, because he's studied law and that's what law is all about, and he humurously mis-remembers the principles of the French Revolution. Yawn. Gone is the mystery, gone is the charm. Instead we're treated to a multiplication of internal monologue that seems focused in shouting the story and its direction to the player, losing the wonder of the original game. Mostly, in this adaptation, you'll be treated to the original cutscenes, which is a treat because they are still beautiful today, but prepare to be disappointed in some bits. Remember the original intro? When it appears here, it has some new bits it, and they jar so badly. The original intro was lovingly and painstakingly hand-drawn, frame by frame, or at least it looks like it was. Then they inject a few new scenes in a different more modern computerised-comic-book style, closer to the intro of BaSS than anything in BS. It's just ugly. Either redo the whole thing or none at all. This game sees the inclusion of some extra puzzles, like sliding puzzles. I've seen only two so far and I hope I don't see any more. One of the strengths of BS is that it avoids these gratuitous, unrelated puzzles, so why include them on BS:DC? If I wanted to play those puzzles, I would. I wouldn't be playing an adventure game, would I? The irony is, shortly after those sliding puzzles there's a proper puzzle that got me good and stumped, so it's not like the designers forgot how to design puzzles. This adaptation also sees the omission of various lines. You won't get, for instance, the conversation about "the little people" in Ireland. Oh, not ALL of the optional flavour is cut out; mostly it'll be a line or an animation or two (like shocking Maguire), never interfering with the same plot. But it reduces the deep charm of the game to a superficial layer, a trait that now BS:DC shares with the later games in the series. Basically, they succeeded in making BS closer in style to the rest of the series. Maybe that was good for the series, but it's very damaging for the game. Finally, some cutscenes are gone. You won't see George going down the sewer, or expecting the inevitable in the closet of the Hotel Ubu only to sigh of relief moments later and get down to some good spying. Small cutscenes, but they make the difference. Instead we now have extra lines in various places that suggest the adventure game audience has become very stupid since BS1 was released and now needs detailed explaining. Nico's internal monologue is supremely irritating. "I had a chocie to make, would I do this or would I do that? Every fiber in my being pointed towards this, and yet I couldn't but do that. I felt the ghost of my father hovering over me, influencing my decision. Then I decided, I would do that and I would carry it through to the end, because it matters. Because I could not let myself down. Because I..." etc etc etc. No, this is not in-game text, but it's the same flavour. It goes on and on and doesn't really mean anything. Adding pseudo-references to a character's back story and family and every single bloody turn does not make that character fleshed out and believable. Bottom line. Should you buy this game? Oh definitely. The original BS1 is still there, and you'll be able to play it on the go. The conversion is great, the interface very good, there should be more adventure games for the iPod. But be warned, and be prepared not to be disappointed if, like me, you played it many times as a kid and was enthralled by it; if you want the real BS experience, go play the original.
