You have to occupy squares in a 3 x 3 matrix with either a Cross or a Circle (whichever you choose at the beginning of the game). Your opponent occupies squares with his mark (Cross if you have chosen Circle and vice-versa). Both you and your opponent occupy the squares alternately. The aim is to achieve a line of three squares successively occupied with Crosses or Circles while blocking your opponent from doing the same. The three successively occupied squares can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal.
