One of the IAEA's statutory functions is "to foster the exchange of scientific and technical information on the peaceful uses of atomic energy." The convening of a conference or symposium is one means of achieving this statutory requirement through either disclosing areas of consensus; clarifying issues; possibly resolving technical disputes; or identifying common, open issues. Conclusions from conferences or symposia can be helpful in determining future activities of the IAEA.
