    Blackwell 1: Legacy Reviews

    • Voice Acting is not so good

I made the mistake of playing Kathy Rain on iOS just before purchasing this point and click adventure. If only I had played this first, maybe the sub-par voice acting - the "acting" part specifically - wouldn't have disappointed me so much. The protagonist's monotone emotionless delivery of most lines sounds read straight from the page. Other VA characters aren't much better, but having to listen to that one female voice throughout made the game much less fun. Even turning off the voices didn't improve the experience for me (sorry). The game play is fun, and the story compelling. I would have liked the graphics to be a teeny bit more up-to-date. I enjoy the feel & look of 90's point and click PC games, but also like the smoother look of current-day controls. Overall, not a bad game, but I don't think I will be purchasing the sequels.

    • The lead protagonist is pretty much

Daria. If you’re a 90s kid and ever had the displeasure of re-watching Daria then you should know what you’re getting into. Great gameplay and voice acting. My gripe is just with the “Im so over being in this game” attitude the protagonist takes is so cliche and her disinterest in doing anything other than griping about the minutia of life is not very effective at sucking you into the story. I get that its a more mature adventure but it ends up feeling like a “spoiled brat in New York” simulator really fast. You have to give your protagonist a sense of danger or at least make them a tad bolder. Just about everything you click on has some snide kind of retort like “Im not touching that.” But then you’ll end up using some random object that makes no sense and the protagonist has no trouble agreeing to do these weird things.I think for the right kind of person this is a great game mechanically but not for anyone looking for something more fantastical then a character who just complains all the time and weird things happened to. Just a matter of taste I suppose.

    • Fantastic start to the series!

This is a great adventure game in the mold of the old point and click games, along with the pixel-art graphics. I loved the atmosphere, characters and storyline. Despite a couple of obtuse puzzles that relied on clicking every option in a dialog tree before the game would progress, I still had fun. Can't wait to play the rest of the games in this series👍

    • These games are near perfect!

Bought all of these and they sucked me in. I loved playing them and I’m sad it’s over. If you like point and clicks you will love these. I’d love to see some more Blackwell games, maybe a few prequels or sequels.

    • Buggy

I ran into a game-stopping bug where the notebook is supposed to update when you talk to a certain person, and it doesn’t. I checked a walkthrough because I was totally stuck, and I had already done what the walkthrough suggested. Tested it again, and even though I, the player, know the information, the notebook doesn’t so I can’t progress. There was another earlier bug with the phone in Kelly’s room that had me stumped but not permanently stuck. Less of a “bug” and more a game design thing if you do things in a different order. Overall, as a fan of adventure games, this fell short. On pacing, I usually expect to be stuck for a bit, then have a big breakthrough where the game moves quickly again for a bit, then get stuck again, repeat. In this one I feel I’ve had to squeeze every clue out like juicing a potato with my bare hands without much reward for my work. And mostly brute forcing. Also I don’t like the characters very much, which is important in a story-driven game. I DO like the premise though! I just don’t feel it delivered on my hopes.
