The app requires your phone number. I made the mistake of using my actual phone number. Since joining I am receiving 15 spam calls a day. I am so disgusted by this. The anxiety associated with getting so many spam calls a day is maddening. So you decide if it’s worth it.
The best part of the Merlin app is that I will know what birds I’m hearing that are impossible to see (you know, 80 ft up in the tree canopy). I would say the bird call ID function is about 98% accurate. It sometimes shows that it recorded a great blue heron, or an osprey, when I know it didn’t. But almost all the ID’s I can confirm. Sometimes I actually heard a bird call (like a pileated woodpecker) that the app didn’t capture. Not sure why because I thought it was loud enough that it should have captured it. Nevertheless, the app has been VERY useful and fun.
This app is amazing. It’s really easy to identify birds through the sound id. I was recording birds close by and it picked up a loon from far down the lake. This is the app to use to learn all about birds in your area.
Amazing tool for all birders. Never failed me yet. Adds so much to my time in the field.
It records the sound and compares it with their data base. Then it gives you their best match complete with picture and a button for more information. All this data in your hand makes learning new birds fast.
