    OutRush - Synthwave Action Reviews

    • Good, but not great.

I thought that this would be another lazy mobile game that I would pick up and delete after two minutes. I was wrong. This game has passion and effort put into it...which is exactly what makes the game's shortcomings all the more disappointing. From the first level, one of the game's major problems shows itself: the performance. I'm playing this game on a fairly new Mobile series device, but when too much stuff is on screen, this causes the frame rate to dip and/or inputs to stop being recognized (this is even after turning off dynamic resolution, which causes more issues). This is a problem because the game is very reflex heavy, so inputs not registering can cause deaths and frustration in the harder levels. I'm not too motivated to complete a game where failure isn't entirely my fault. Even with the smoothest frame rate and perfect input registration, the game is very demanding skill-wise, requiring near instantaneous input after input in some sections. This is not necessarily a bad thing for regular people, but I could see this being a problem for people with decreased motor skills or reflexes. There are people that might physically be unable to beat the game. An option in the settings to decrease the game speed or even a difficulty select screen, would go a long way in making the game more accessible for those who need it. Perhaps even an adaptive difficulty system would work, where more deaths in a level would decrease the difficulty upon subsequent attempts. This could also help curb the fact that the game gets difficult perhaps a bit too quickly. It doesn't take too many levels for the player's reflexes to get tested. Lower difficulties could prevent having to redesign the levels if implemented well. I feel like the player should get more invincibility frames after getting hit. As is, this can lead to you dying instantly to 4 walls grouped close to each other. Perhaps this could also be another difficulty setting to add. On the topic of accessibility, I take issue with the shoot and boost blocks. There's no visual distinction between the two besides color, which is definitely going to be a problem for people with colorblindness. There needs to be something else that differentiates the two, like spikes on the edges of the blocks that you have to shoot for instance. On the more minor side of complaints, the textures can be a bit blurry from close up. I should again note that I'm on an Mobile series device, and I've turned off dynamic resolution. I haven't completed the game for the reasons stated above, but it would be cool if we got to see the player character's face. I'm not saying the player should have dialogue, but I think seeing the character in the flesh would make players connect to him/her more. I can tell that the people who made this put their heart and soul into this project; this isn't a cheap cash grab. This has the potential to be a really great game, but as is, with the input issues and lack of accessibility options, the game is just good, perhaps even a bit mediocre.

    • Great game, one problem

This game is so difficult it's fun. It's not a pay to win. However, a lot of my scores haven't been saving which is annoying when I finally make a top 10 run after an obscene amount of practice. Please fix this! Overall a great game. Edit: Score problem unfixed for more than a year now. Despite claims that the game would be updated to fix such problems, nothing has been done. This creates a lack of incentive for players to replay levels after beating the game. I will change this review to 5 stars once this major flaw has been resolved.

    • Fun game but the controls need serious work

It’s nice to have the choice of two type of inputs, however: - Button mode is unplayable as it doesn’t support simultaneously pressing two inputs. - Swipe is ok but if the game lags the input is just ignored which make some levels really unpleasant, and very frustrating. Making a game hard coz the controls are terrible is not the best design choice imho.

    • Drift into Cyberspace

Sometime during the last century some cool guy thought to himself, if I combine your average retro video game with cyber racing I can create something totally new. I’ll ride these waves, no matter the time of day. When I’m out cold on the couch or an airport is giving me flight fright, worry not, this never gets boring... awesome words.
