Well, you have a large number of high ratings, which encourage me to try Brightmind. So, I tried the intro meditation, explaining to me why we learn mindfulness. So far, so good. I have, shall we say, experienced meditations of many types, with an emphasis on mindfulness. The first problem, and I didn’t blame your app personally, is the price of membership. I am rated 100% disabled by the VA, due to my time in the armed forces, which means I’m unable to work. Again, not your fault, but as people you get than me like to say…” just sayin’”. The other comment that bothered me is the first topic you addressed in your version of FAQs is that you do not use nature sounds in the background of any meditation. Your reasoning is something I cannot agree with. I guess I’m one of “those people” that like nature. Mindfulness, as you correctly described, is training your self to be aware of subtle things , feelings, sounds, sensations, developing the “ mental muscle” to improve your cognitive ability to maleate your awareness, basically your life. I was attracted to Brightmind because it claimed to help you “ find happiness”. I’m thinking, He’ll yeah! Who doesn’t want to be happy? I wanted you to know that this is meant to be a comment letter, not a hateful flame mail. I also wish to point out that, because of the high level of work related stress in Japan, they developed a strategy which became a social trend, called” Forest Bathing”. Dr Sanjay Gupta, a neurosurgeon who sometimes appears on CNN, Fox, and runs a podcast, while still performing surgeries, went to visit Tokyo, Osaka, and other cities and provinces that I don’t recall the names. He was researching the area around the “Blue Zones”, which are areas on the planet where people tend to live past 100 years. Okinawa is on the list along with the Italian islands, and a few others. In Japan, people meet in a park in one of the Northern Perfectures of the main island of Japan. They test their cortisol level with strips of indicator paper, which folks can get in drug stores. They take notes of the reading. Then they take a hike through a heavily forested park in the mountains for 20-30 minutes. They return and retest their cortisol level. It dropped over twenty units( either mg or micrograms, I need to watch the documentary again.) since cortisol is a stress hormone that secretes into the body during chronic stress, it’s always good to keep it low. Okay, I am finished, I just wanted to mention that maybe you might consider adding an option for people who like nature sounds. My mental faculties always seem sharper after my wife and I walk in our park. But, I realize there are people who might prefer silence. I like both and have meditated both ways. Be well, you do have good information on here and I’m sorry I couldn’t join you on the journey. Blessings.
We are not taught to take care of ourselves so we can be present to understanding the world. This app assists me everyday to being happier, loving more, releasing the ego to be present to actually what’s happening and to live life to the fullest.
Switching from the free trial to the paid subscription was a nightmare. And installing the update wiped out the record of all the units I had completed, forcing me to start at the beginning again. Theoretically not a bad thing, but when you have limited time it’s extremely frustrating. Customer service also leaves much to be desired.
I am a teacher so I have free access to many of the really great meditation apps because they very generously give lifetime subscriptions. I just purchased a lifetime access to Brightmind because I have found it to be revolutionary compared to the other apps. It’s very simple in design which is thoughtfully intentional. I like that it’s not overwhelming and I don’t have to make choices. It truly is training me to concentrate, be aware and understand the way my mind works. It is fantastic. PS I love the sound of the bell they use.
Update: there are awesome meditations recorded by Shinzen, George Haas and others in the Library! I didn’t love the main guided meditations but after discovering the older content in the library this is a 5 star app. Thanks!
