  • Great for independent study minus a few little inconveniences

I absolutely love using this in conjunction with Shirabe Jisho because the latter doesn't have pitch accent information available. However, Shirabe's interface is more fluid and convenient to use, and has more condensed, easily accessible information which is the reason I don't exclusively use JA Accent. I think JA could benefit from a few tweaks but otherwise it's extremely useful imo. One of the issues I come across is that whenever I switch back to it, I'm forced back into my English keyboard. I’d also love an option to immediately be able to input a search every time I switch back to JA Accent instead of having to click on the search bar, delete the previous entry, pick my JP keyboard again, and then enter the new search. It's a minor inconvenience, but it's one thing Shirabe has that makes looking something up quick and simple. I also love that the ads aren't too intrusive. So overall, a very good reference app that could be adjusted for absolute efficiency! (Time spent working around a dictionary is time taken from study!) Cheers, you guys~ Post 6 month edit: Still a good app but still patiently waiting for the option to have JA keyboards be the default!

  • Has pitch accent

Great for pitch accent. Great for stroke order of kanji. But the translations of the example sentences into English are often incomprehensible. But even with this laughable over sight. And because Japanese sentences are fine. I still give this dictionary 5 stars. This is one of the three dictionaries that I use. And this is the one I go to first!

  • super useful !!

this app is very useful and it has actual audio on the words instead of a robotish voice. it also has really good stroke order pictures for kanji. i really like this app! the only thing stopping me from giving five stars is the app doesn't give the pitch accent for a word when it has a particle on it. other than that, amazing!

  • Excellent. Seems to have improved heiban vs odaka

There are only four basic pitch patterns, and initially it seemed that this reference conflated two of them. (For example, Japanese hashi (端 edge) can be distinguished from hashi (橋 bridge) by whether the following particle will stay high or drop low.) There is now a clear notation for the latter (odaka) pattern. With this aspect fixed, I’d say JAccent is now THE reference app for its niche. It has additional promising-looking features that I haven’t really begun to explore.

  • Doesn’t work offline!

Please please please read this review. I used to love this app and use it all the time. But since a recent update, the app won’t start unless connected to the internet. This makes it useless when offline. It also doesn’t seem to connect when on a phone call. Also, even with internet it takes 1-2 seconds to load, which is annoying when quickly trying to look up words. Please remove the online connection on app load, or make it async/optional. There’s no need for an offline dictionary to require internet.
