To be fair, the graphics and interface are undeniably attractive; aesthetics hold no ground however when the rest of the game falls so flat. Beyond it being inordinately boring with unnecessarily lengthy and dramatic dialogue, there’s this constant bane of wondering what to do next... and early on you realize that you don’t care what to do next because you’ve completely lost interest in this puzzle-less nap. I also truly disliked that the game itself doesn’t fill your screen- inventory and visuals are so small to begin with so not having the game stretch to the full width of your screen does it no favors.
Some games are real art and immerse you in a different world. Frostrune is one of those. The puzzles were not all that hard but thoroughly enjoyable to play. I didn’t feel cheated as some have said although it didn’t take me too long to finish. I like the way the story developed. This game embodied what I love in adventure games, immersion in a different world and puzzles.
It was buggy tbh. for a while there was a thing that wouldn’t let me finish past the horse level—I’d get the thing right but it would crash out, so i deleted the game, mad at myself for paying for it. but i came back to it and manages to finish it and wow. the story was so simple but effective and all the side puzzles served the main point of the game, and you could really just click around and look at stuff. the sound is beautiful! the ghosts were A+—whoever was singing those voices, thank you. The art is stunning, wow. What a gorgeous game. over all I’m really happy I came back to this.
This is a very high quality game in almost every way. The story is excellent, especially if you like Norse mythology. The setting is mysterious and a little creepy at times. The sound, music, and voice acting were well done, and the spectre vision was very cool. Overall, I really enjoyed the game, especially the fact that hints came with it. If only it was longer, but it was still long enough to be a good game.
I was disappointed to read some lackluster reviews of this game—but thankfully they didn’t dissuade me. I’m so glad that I purchased and played this game, as it’s a point-and-click adventure in its own genre. The puzzles are creative and just challenging enough (thank goodness for the in-game hints), the music is haunting, and the artwork is exquisite. Best of all, the world is truly immersive, with the perfect synthesis of storyline, artwork, puzzles, and atmosphere. I’ve played A LOT of games, and the list of 5-star winners is limited to The Room series and the Rusty Lake series. Thanks to The Frostrune, I’ve added one more game to that list?!
