Style Studio for Android

Let me first say that Smule has a lot to learn about change management. This never should have been so jarring to their user base. In fact, if handled properly their users would have been clamoring for it. Instead Smule got tons of bad reviews and lost goodwill from their otherwise very loyal users. Communication is key to driving adoption!!! Zero stars for this. Now that I’ve spent time using styles in Smule I don't want to view a video without them. The WOW factor has increased exponentially. The visual and audio effects are wonderful. The user experience, however, is still lacking. Simple common functions such as open, edit and save are hard to find or require several steps to use. There is no in-app help to speak of and the icons are not typical. Navigation is a mystery at first and not at all intuitive. The flow to create a style is entirely backward. Although based on and applied to categories established in the uploaded songs, users are not given the ability to view the categories in uploaded songs from within Smule unless they uploaded it nor in Styles when selecting a song to create their style. Instead they have to find an existing performance –blindly searching through what can be many performances by other Smulers of the many different uploaded versions of a song, before they can create a new style. What Studio does at this point is the reason this review has any stars. It allows the user to, category by category, create an appealing visual and audio effects template that can be applied to any song. After, however, the inability to simply save, retrieve and edit takes away stars. Opening a style does not put the original version in edit mode. It creates a new style altogether. Even if only minor changes are needed, the app will not allow the user to open, edit and save the original Style. It forces users to create a new version of the style-requiring them to again define a name, tags and icon but allowing them to exactly match the original. This creates a maintenance burden on the user as they have to find and remove styles that may appear to be duplicates but are instead revisions of the original. Though potentially named the same, and perhaps created using an existing recording, updates are not applied to existing recording versions using the style. And despite their role in creating a style, previously recorded performances can never have that style applied within Smule. After publishing a style the app only allows the user to create a new style or sing using the style they just created rather than returning them to the app’s initial landing page so they can choose their next action The user must close the app to get back to the initial landing page. So, lots of potential but difficult to get to by casual users.

It’s hard to find your way around this app. Just one example, I should be able to find my uploaded songs under my profile, but can’t. It would also be very helpful if one could change the key to what they need. It’s a great concept, poorly applied.

No rating. Why? I have tried to figure the Style app out so many times I want to scream. But then I would lose my voice. Oh yeah, that’s why I pay for Smule, so I can sing, not be a graphics editor!! Smule was just fine before you added all this “stuff”. I hate trying to sing a song - because I have to scroll the tons of STYLES!! Hoping to EVENTUALLY find one that doesn’t have FLOWERS OR BUBBLES coming out of my eyeballs and mouth!! Can you PLEASE give us some decent directions on how to use this app. I’m sick of singing with all kinds of technical hoops to jump through. It has really DOWNGRADED the entire singing experience. Look at my channel. I used to sing ALL THE TIME. Now it is a huge struggle to push myself to do it, because life is TOUGH ENOUGH w/o having this to deal with too. I’ve hated it since day 1. Please - explain this app - it’s called DIRECTIONS. Maybe- we can learn the basics enough to want to stay. Btw, w all the upgrades on Smule, it glitches more than ever. Really bummed out over your choices. Not sure who is your biz consultant, but they are way off track. Smule is turning into a Teeny Bopper App. If you haven’t thought it through, unless their parents pay…….. you might want to think of us that can afford it without mommy & daddy. Sad in Smulesville!!!!

If you make a mistake, you can’t fix it. It always says I already have a style and I need to delete my current style. Such a great idea to provide NO instructions, Smule!
