  • A must have in my live sound toolbox

5 stars! Would stick with the free version if not for the timing of the ads popping up while I have been trying it out. I will definitely be purchasing the full hopefully ad free version because IT IS WORTH IT. The ads always pop up when I am ringing out my wedges and feedback in monitors with my GEQ on my Mobile and this RTA Spectrum just as the frequency that I’m trying to isolate starts to take off and start screaming and I have no free hand to hit the little “X” and close the popup window. That being said, I have been using the free version for the past 5 years doing live sound 5-7 days a week in all very different rooms with passive speakers with and power amps or powered active wedges. As I started working with the Midas Pro series, there is no RTA in the app parametric or GEQ UI, so, I tried several free versions of SPL dB Meters and Real Time Analysis Spectrum of frequencies humans can hear. I used this with all sorts of different wedges and gain up my mic preamp on a vocal channel to about 3/4 to where I want it to be and still have the headroom without blowing myself away on a hot mic yet to have been EQ’d. I have pretty good ear training in my training and career because of practice and I can use auditory memories relative to frequencies accurately but with a live band on stage as the FOH engineer or as a monitor engineer calling a frequency close to the problem is helpful but not quite fast enough to get band and pull 6-8dB down in the 2.6kHZ to 8kHz zone where that screaming feedback is so piercing you need to grab it immediately. Many many many options for visual representation and dynamic peak hold time, a pause feature (AWESOME, you can pause the moment you see that frequency and then pull the mic away, let the feedback fade out and then find the peak in that range). Overall it’s pretty darn accurate with RTA overall SPL dB levels. I have put it side by side with professional dB meters and it may have a tiny bit of latency compared to pro meters and not as much detail in the readout but it always matches up. Both the SPL meter, and RTA are lightning fast with such a detailed spectrum analyzer that is accurate and fast enough for even the non-resonant transients you can see all the peaks and valleys then pause it and get a detailed look at all them in your own way to find harmonic overtones or little areas you like on a track looking for a little boost and to begin to identify these different instruments in full mixes with an easy to use GUI on a sharp looking fullscreen view is great if you need something for live audio. Feedback Detection, Detailed and Dynamic customizable views, many options for your specific needs, fast, accurate and broad ranging looks at overall mixes and SPLs in front of the line array and in the back of the room, the ability to pause the analysis, get a quick snapshot in time to find that frequency feeding back at 3.6kHz the second you point your mic at the wedge and as quickly as it starts to be audible is something that is a game changer for full time or part time engineers.
