Whats new in ELIZA v2.00

6 things about ELIZA

1. Since then, Artifical Intelligence has made remarkable progress, but it is interesting to see what these early programs were able to achieve, with fractions of the computing power of a modern smart phone.
2. ELIZA is an early natural language processing program created between 1964 and 1966 at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory by Joseph Weizenbaum.
3. Developed by Alan Turing in 1950, it evaluates the machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.
4. Eliza simulated a conversation betwen man and machine, by using a system of keywords and scripts meant to react to them.
5. I simply regret not to be able to locate any original sound of the machine (35 years ago !) for a complete ambiance.
6. This presentation is a revival of the port I made back then in AppleSoft Basic on my own Apple //e with the very same green screen, and the very same floppy drives.

Reviews

  • Not equal to the Eliza that was on my TRS-80 Model III

Very limited conversationally. Words are misspelled, like “belie” instead of “believe.” The Eliza of 1981 provided more varied responses and a dose of sassiness. Also, the AppStore did not advise me that the app was not up to date with my device and OS until AFTER I had paid for the app. However, Eliza is of historic importance. I hope the programmer will improve it to capture more of what the original actually was. A good start, but it should be free until it is up to date technologically and a better representation of the historic version.
